The unemployment rate increased by 2.1 points between the third quarter of 2022 and that of 2023, going from 11.4% to 13.5%, according to the High Commission for Planning (HCP).

This rate results from an increase in rural areas of 1.8 points to 7% and in urban areas of 2 points to 17%, indicates the HCP which has just published an information note relating to the situation of the housing market. work in the 3rd quarter of 2023, specifying that the number of unemployed stood at 1,625,000 people, which corresponds to an increase of 18%.

This increase in unemployment affected all categories of the population, notes the same source, adding that the largest increase is recorded among young people aged 15 to 24 years old by 6.5 points to 38.2% and people aged 25 to 34 (+2.5 points to 20.9%).

In addition, the unemployment rate increased by 2.2 points for men, from 9.5% to 11.7%, and by 2 points for women, from 17.8% to 19.8%. .

By diploma, this rate recorded an increase of 2.1 points among graduates, from 17.7% to 19.8% and of 1.4 points among non-graduates, from 4.1% to 5.5%. .

Furthermore, during this period, unemployment was marked by the increase in the proportion of people recently unemployed. The share of people who have been unemployed for less than a year rose from 31% to 33.7%. Thus, the average duration of unemployment fell from 33 months to 31 months.

The HCP also reveals that half of the unemployed (50.1%) found themselves in this situation following the completion or cessation of studies (38.1%) or reaching working age (12 %).

Regarding the volume of employed workers in a situation of underemployment, it increased by 94,000 people, between the third quarter of 2022 and the same period of 2023, from 911,000 to 1,005,000 people at the national level, from 488,000 to 523,000 people in urban areas and from 423,000 to 482,000 in rural areas. The underemployment rate thus stood at 9.6% at the national level (8.1% in urban areas and 12% in rural areas).

As for the volume of the employed active population in a situation of underemployment linked to the number of hours worked, it increased from 401,000 to 501,000 people at the national level. The corresponding rate increases from 3.7% to 4.8%.

The employed active population in a situation of underemployment linked to insufficient income or the mismatch between training and employment has, for its part, reached 505,000 people at the national level. The corresponding rate has virtually stagnated at 4.8%.

The construction sector (building and public works), the most affected by underemployment, experienced a significant increase in the underemployment rate with +3.1 points (from 15.8% to 18.9%), followed by by the sector of “Industry including crafts” with 2.1 points (from 5.6% to 7.7%).
