If that sounds familiar then those in Spain don’t appear to feel the same way, as the country has vigorously fended off claims to hand the areas over.

The government argues they are formative parts of the country, despite them being the EU’s only land border with Africa.

Spain instead claims that Gibraltar has never been a part of the United Kingdom, which somehow means that London’s continued control of the Rock cannot be justified.

But while Madrid says the fact the people of Ceuta and Melilla reject ceding authority to Rabat is enough to maintain control, it refuses to accept the same thing with Gibraltar.
