Algeria, the Largest Gas Exporter to Spain

Algeria maintained its position as the leading gas exporter to Spain in March 2024, with a share of 42%, followed by Russia with 25.7% and the United States with 18.2%.

According to a press release from the ‘Energy’ Energy Platform published Wednesday, April 17, 2024, Algeria was at the top of the list of gas exporters to Spain in March 2024 with a percentage of 42%, or 12.2 terawatt hours, of which 8 .7 terawatt hours of natural gas and 3.5 terawatt hours of liquefied natural gas.

These volumes represent a huge increase on an annual basis, since Spanish imports of Algerian gas in March 2023 amounted to around 9.27 terawatt hours, according to data published by the energy platform.

Russia moved into second place with 25.7%, with a total of 7.49 terawatt hours of liquefied gas, up from 5.34 terawatt hours in February 2024 and 5.46 terawatt hours in March 2023.

Spanish imports of US liquefied gas come third, at 18.2%, recording a significant decrease to 5.29 terawatt hours, compared to 8.01 terawatt hours in February 2024 and 11.01 terawatt hours in March 2023.

The annual report of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum indicates that the European Union imports gas by pipeline from five countries, including Algeria.

At the African level, the same report places Algeria first in natural gas production, followed by Equatorial Guinea and Libya.

He also notes that Algeria has increased its supply of natural gas, in particular thanks to the development of exploited deposits and the acceleration of the exploitation of discoveries made by Sonatrach.
