The leaders of Spain, Ireland, Malta, and Slovenia announced their readiness to recognize the State of Palestine, “the only way to achieve peace and security” in the region.

Spain, Ireland, Malta, and Slovenia say they are ready to recognize the State of Palestine. Leaders of the four countries met on the sidelines of a summit in Brussels on Friday to discuss their ” desire to recognize Palestine .”

“We agree that the only way to achieve lasting peace and stability in the region is to implement a two-state solution, with Israeli and Palestinian states living side by side in peace. and security,” reads a joint statement.

Although the EU supports the so-called two-state solution, it has not yet unanimously supported the recognition of a Palestinian state.

Since the start of the war in Gaza, Ireland, and Spain have repeatedly expressed their willingness to recognize Palestine and have spearheaded efforts to toughen the EU’s stance on Israel facing some victims of fighting in the Palestinian enclave.

Pedro Sánchez, Prime Minister of Spain, promised last November that his new government would make recognition of Palestinian statehood its top foreign policy priority.

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar also confirmed in February that a group of member states were in talks to formally recognize Palestine to allow “a fairer negotiation” when the war ends.
