Melilla to conquer Algerian tourists

The president of the port authority of the Spanish enclave of Melilla, Victor Gamero intends to work for the launch of a new maritime link with Oran in order to attract Algerian tourists.

Attract Algerian tourists from border regions with Morocco. That’s the whole point of Mr. Gamero’s initiative. He has already requested the support of regional governor Eduardo de Castro for a maritime service project with Algeria. His intention is to succeed in convincing the top Spanish authorities of the need to open a maritime line between Melilla and the Algerian port of Ghazaouet, reports local newspaper Melilla Hoy.

The president of the port authority also calls for Algerians to benefit from the same facilities as Moroccan citizens, that is to say visa-free access as is the case for other Spanish ports. “What we want is that the same regime that we have with Morocco be applied with Algeria in order to allow its citizens to access with only their passport or a simple multiple exit visa for Melilla”, explains- he does.

Justifying the merits of the project, the initiator highlights the proximity of the port of Ghazaouet which is only about 96 kilometers from the enclave. He is convinced that his project will bring the Algerians and the Spaniards together. Since the closure of the land borders between Algeria and Morocco since 1994 has had the effect of preventing Algerians from entering Melilla.
