It’s now official. Portugal has withdrawn from the race to host the 2030 World Cup final. “Portugal does not have a stadium (with a capacity of at least 80,000 seats), it will not invest to increase the capacity of the stadiums, which means that Portugal will not have the World Cup final,” declared the coordinator of the tripartite candidacy, the Portuguese Antonio Laranjo, Tuesday, March 19 in Lisbon, during the ceremony of presentation of the slogan and the visual identity of the 2030 World Cup.
Spanish media welcome this withdrawal. “The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) believes that the final could take place at the renovated Santiago Bernabéu (in Madrid), where the work continues, even if the Barcelona city hall, with the agreement of the FC. Barcelona is already preparing a comprehensive report to defend the candidacy of the new Camp Nou, currently under construction, to host the 2030 World Cup final,” underlines Mundo Deportivo.
Morocco is still in the race. To defend its chances, the government has scheduled the construction of a large stadium in Benslimane, with a capacity of 113,000 seats for a budget of nearly 5 billion dirhams, over the period 2025 – 2028. A project which concerns part of the media in Spain.
