Visit of the Speaker of the House of Commons of Canada to Algeria: Fergus Highlights the Importance of Working to Strengthen Bilateral Relations

The Speaker of the House of Commons of Canada, Mr. Greg Fergus, underlined, Thursday in Algiers, the importance of strengthening relations between Algeria and Canada which are celebrating the 60th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations.  

In a statement to the press following the audience granted to him by the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the Speaker of the House of Commons of Canada indicated that his visit to Algeria was “fruitful”, underlining “the importance of working to strengthen bilateral relations”. He added that his meeting with President Tebboune made it possible to address “several issues that concern Algeria and Canada (…)”, noting in this regard that “bilateral exchanges go in the direction of further strengthening bilateral relations “. Greg Fergus indicated that he had discussed with the President of the Republic the role of the Algerian community established in Canada, through its “culture and creativity”.

 He also expressed his “deep emotion” when he went, in the morning, to the Martyr’s shrine where he laid a wreath of flowers in memory of “the martyrs who sacrificed themselves for the independence of this great country “. The Speaker of the House of Commons of Canada was also received on Thursday by the President of the Council of the Nation, Mr. Salah Goudjil, said a press release from the Council.

 The meeting was an opportunity to review “the state and prospects of friendly relations uniting Algeria and Canada (…)”. Mr. Goudjil, in this regard, affirmed that “Algeria and Canada maintain good relations framed by regular political consultations, which can be raised to higher levels, in light of the numerous economic and commercial cooperation mechanisms in place. and promising partnership opportunities favored by a business climate conducive to investment and wealth creation in the new Algeria, the foundations of which are laid by the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

“The Palestinian cause at the top of the priorities”

As part of the exchange of views on international and regional issues of common interest, Mr. Goudjil underlined “Algeria’s attachment to the principle of the sovereignty of States and non-interference in their internal affairs. “. The two parties also discussed the tragic situation in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories, as well as the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in full view of the whole world. 

Mr. Goudjil reaffirmed, in this regard, Algeria’s constant position vis-à-vis the Palestinian cause, specifying that “support for the right of the Palestinian people to the establishment of their independent State with El Quds as its capital is an immutable official and popular position. 

And added that “Algeria, under the leadership of the President of the Republic, has placed the Palestinian cause at the top of the priorities of its diplomacy, particularly in its capacity as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.” 

The President of the Council of the Nation, in this context, recalled “the suffering endured by the Sahrawi people prey to colonial arrogance, serious violations of human rights and the plundering of the resources of their despoiled lands”, maintaining that “its just cause, which is at the level of the UN Special Committee on Decolonization, benefits from growing international support but continues, nevertheless, to suffer from the non-application of international legality and -respect for the right of the Sahrawi people to sovereignty and self-determination through the organization of a free referendum in Western Sahara.
