The Algerian Minister of Energy, Mohamed Arkab, revealed, on Monday, April 29, 2024, ambitious plans to double primary energy production. And this, with an emphasis on natural gas and the acceleration of the energy transition in Algeria.

At the G7 Ministerial Conference on Climate, Energy, and Environment in Turin, Italy, Arkab outlined initiatives aimed at strengthening Algeria’s position as a reliable global energy supplier. Thus, securing long-term supply and reducing the carbon footprint are at the heart of this strategy, supported by huge investments in gas infrastructure.

By highlighting the trans-Saharan gas pipeline project, Mr. Arkab underlined its social, economic, and security importance; as well as its role in strengthening energy security in the region.

Universalize access to energy…

Algeria’s energy sector is booming, with massive investments aimed at ensuring energy security and meeting growing demand. Emphasis is placed on accessibility to electricity and gas at affordable prices, reflecting the State’s commitment to universalizing access to energy.

The energy transition is at the heart of national energy policy, with an ambitious target of 30% renewable energy by 2035. Algeria is also committed to reducing greenhouse gas and methane emissions. While investing in hydrogen and electricity projects, aiming to become a regional energy hub.

The strengthening of electricity interconnections with Europe and the Algerian network’s electricity interconnection projects will play a crucial role in the energy transition. By offering new export prospects to Europe and better access to energy for neighboring African countries.

Finally, the “Sud 2” project will position Algeria as a leader in the emerging green hydrogen industry.
