Swiss coach Vladimir Petkovic has been named coach of Algeria to succeed Djamel Belmadi, dismissed in January after the elimination of the Fennecs in the first round of the African Cup of Nations, the Algerian federation (FAF) announced on Thursday).

“ Vladimir Petkovic is the new national coach. The new coach will arrive in Algiers this Sunday and will host a press conference on Monday,” the FAF said in a press release. Vladimir Petkovic was at the head of Bordeaux during the first part of the 2021-2022 season. The former Switzerland coach, quarter-finalist of Euro 2020, however, had never been able to find his place within the Bordeaux club which he had to leave in February 2022. He had been without a club since then. Djamel Belmadi, 46, took charge of the “ Greens ” in August 2018. He was praised after taking Algeria to the top of African football by winning the CAN in 2019 in Egypt. Its star began to fade after Algeria’s early elimination from CAN 2022 and then its failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
