Tunisia-Libya: Agreement for the Reopening of the Ras Jedir Border Post

Libyan Minister of the Interior Imed Trabelsi announced after a meeting in Carthage with Tunisian President Kaïs Saïed, Monday May 6, 2024, that an agreement had been reached for the reopening of the Ras Jedir border post, closed “for security reasons” since March 19.

For its part, the Tunisian presidency indicated in a press release that “instructions will be given to the competent authorities of both parties, Tunisian and Libyan, to begin opening the border post once security preparations have been completed”.

Preparations, the note continues, “will continue on Tuesday and the border crossing will be opened under the laws of the two countries and bilateral trade in both directions”.

During the meeting, Saïed and Trabelsi spoke of “the excellent relations between the two countries” and the “determination to further develop them in all areas, particularly in the coordination of efforts on the issue of irregular immigration ”.

This phenomenon “which is getting worse day by day,” said Saïed, can only be combatted “by coordinating and integrating positions and eliminating the causes, within the framework of a new approach that involves all countries concerned”.

Remember that Tunisia has no borders with sub-Saharan countries and that the migrants who enter its territory come from Libya and Algeria with whom cooperation in the fight against this scourge remains very weak.
