Sonatrach Will Build a Petrochemical Plant for 1.5 Billion USD

New contract for the British giant  Petrofac  in hydrocarbons in Algeria. Step Polymers, a 100% subsidiary of Sonatrach, has awarded a contract worth 1.5 5billion dollars to the consortium made up of Petrofac – HQC, announced the National Hydrocarbons Company in a press release published this Thursday, May 18.

Petrofac’s share in this project was not specified in Sonatrach’s press release.

It is an EPC contract (engineering, procurement, & construction), at the level of the industrial zone of Arzew in Oran for the realization of a petrochemical complex for the production of 550,000 tons/year of polypropylene, specified the Sonatrach group. The construction period for this plant is set at 42 months.

This project is one of those that Sonatrach intended to launch in the field of petrochemicals, with the aim of transforming hydrocarbons in Algeria. Polypropylene is used in many sectors such as automotive, packaging, household appliances, textiles…

Several contracts for Petrofac in Algeria

The Algerian oil group also specifies that the awarding of the contract to Petrofac – HGC comes after “the culmination of a selection process, launched in April 2021, through a limited consultation, towards world leaders in the field of construction petrochemical complexes.

Sonatrach adds that this 1.5 billion dollar contract was awarded to the lowest bidder, the Petrofac – HQC consortium, in accordance with the procurement procedure in force within STEP Polymers Spa”.

On September 29, the Sonatrach group announced that it had awarded two contracts to groups made up of Petrofac, for a total amount of 500 million dollars.

Since 2019, Petrofac, a British company specializing in engineering and project implementation, has obtained numerous  contracts  in the hydrocarbon sector in Algeria.

In March 2019, this company had obtained, as part of a consortium, a  contract of one billion dollars  for the development of the gas field of Ain Tsila in the wilaya of Illizi.
