Stéphane Romatet is the new French Ambassador to Algeria. He will take office soon and will replace François Gouyette, in office since 2020. Some media sources refer to next July, the date of departure of Mr. Gouyette and arrival of Mr. Romatet.

The news of his appointment was confirmed this Wednesday, May 17 by the Grand Mosque of Paris. Indeed, Mr. Romatet was received by Chems-Eddine Hafiz, the rector of this mosque.

“As is tradition, the rector Chems-Eddine Hafiz received Stéphane Romatet, who will soon begin his mission as French ambassador to Algeria”, writes the Great Mosque of Paris on Twitter.

The information on the appointment of Mr. Romatet as the new French ambassador to Algeria was already reported by Algerian and French media last March, which described him as a “seasoned diplomat”.

Aged 63, Stéphane Romatet was notably ambassador to Australia and then to Egypt. He was also Manuel Valls’ diplomatic adviser when the latter was Prime Minister.

The last post held by Romatet was that of director of the crisis and support center at the Quai d’Orsay. He directed the relief operations for the victims of the War in Ukraine and of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria.
