Mauritanian Health Minister Kane Boubacar on Wednesday in Atar (400 kilometers north of Nouakchott) laid the foundation stone for a new hospital said to be the largest in the north of the country, source told APA.The hospital built in an area of two hectares, will have a capacity of 150 beds, and is funded by the Saudi Development Fund to the tune of US $6.7 million.

Work will be completed in 14 months, and it will be immediately supplied with the most modern equipment, the Minister said during the ceremony.

Boubacar added that the new hospital will have most of the common medical specialties, especially emergencies, medical check-ups, gynecology, pediatrics, surgery, resuscitation, hemodialysis, among others.

Health services and medicines in Mauritania are often said to be inadequate; consequently, most well-off patients generally seek healthcare abroad, including in Spain, Morocco, Tunisia or Senegal.
