ALGIERS- Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ramtane Lamamra said Monday here that the United Nations Organization (UN) needs “in-depth reform” to it can adapt to world changes.

“Seven decades after its creation, the UN needs an in-depth reform so it can adapt to the changes that mark the world, meet the peoples’ aspirations for development and promote its role in the service of equality and justice,” said Lamamra in a speech on the occasion of the celebration of the Algerian Diplomacy Day and the United Nations Day.

The Minister reiterated the importance of Algeria’s request on the revision of the UN Security Council component through a “just” geographical distribution of its members, in line with the African demand expressed in the Ezulwini Consensus.

Assessing the United Nations’ role at the political level, Lamamra said that “despite the achievements made, the organization’s efforts have not allowed it to reach its goals, namely peace, security and stability in the world as required by its Charter and its missions.”

The UN Organization is “today called to pursue and multiply efforts to find just and lasting settlement of pending questions for dozens of years, notably Palestine and Western Sahara as well as the crises that rage in the Middle East region and threaten peace and security,” he underlined.

Moreover, the minister highlighted the “major achievements” made by the Algerian diplomacy in the resolution of some political crisis in the world, “thanks to its historical legacy, its place in the world and the wisdom of its leaders.”
