A gas pipeline exploded this Tuesday, July 13 in Algeria, catching fire following a rupture that was caused by work carried out by a farmer.

Work carried out by a farmer in the wilaya of Mascara on Tuesday (July 13th) caused a fire and the explosion of a gas pipeline connecting Relizane to Maghnia.

In order to put an end to the fire, agents of the civil protection unit of Zahana commune went to the site, local authorities said in a statement.

While the operation was in progress, the services of the company Sonelgaz proceeded to close the valves of the pipeline.

The press release also indicates that the work carried out would have produced a spark which could have caused the fire followed by an explosion.

The pipeline in question is located in the village of Benaouali, in the commune of Zahana, and has a diameter of 50 centimeters and a pressure of 20 bars.

There were no human victims following this accident, the situation having been quickly brought under control.
