Black box, automatic cruise control…. Will the new equipment which is compulsory on vehicles in Europe from next July equip cars assembled in Algeria, in particular by European manufacturers?

Cars are expected to cost even more, at least in Europe where new legislation due to come into force next July requires additional safety equipment.

The measure is part of the “ Vision Zero ” strategy which aims to achieve “ zero deaths ” on European roads in 2050.

From July 7, all new vehicles sold on the European market must be equipped with new safety equipment, eight in number, reports TF1 on its website.

Given that 95% of European accidents are attributed to the human factor, new equipment is expected to reduce driver errors.

These are, according to the same sources, emergency braking assistance, the onboard black box, obstacle detection when reversing, fatigue warning, lane crossing warning, and cruise control. intelligent speed sensor, an immobilizer breathalyzer device, and a sign-reading system.

Eight new mandatory equipment for cars in Europe

According to the explanations provided, emergency braking assistance allows the vehicle to brake autonomously in dangerous situations, the fatigue warning draws the driver’s attention when he lacks concentration and alerts him when he crosses the line signals when a line drawn on the ground is crossed unintentionally.

Intelligent Cruise Control uses GPS and a camera to deduce if the speed limit is exceeded and regulate it automatically. As for the sign reading system, it provides the driver with several indications, such as speed limits, and using cameras.

The new legislation also requires manufacturers to equip new vehicles with pre-equipment which allows the installation of a breathalyzer device. Quite simply, the drunk driver cannot start the vehicle.

Finally, the onboard black box will function like that of an airplane. It keeps data for 40 seconds, 30 before and 10 after the accident, including speed, whether or not a seat belt was worn, use of the indicator, the violence of the impact, etc.

Two other pieces of equipment making it possible to detect the presence of “vulnerable users”, such as cyclists and shock mitigation for pedestrians, will also be compulsory from next July on new models than on all new vehicles from 2026.

All this equipment has a cost, which could be reflected in the final price of the vehicle.

With this new measure, the European Union wants to reduce road deaths. Road accidents cause 25,000 deaths and 140,000 injuries in the EU each year.
