ALGIERS-Minister of Housing, National Planning and the City, and interim Trade Minister Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced Thursday in Algiers “rigorous” repressive measures would be taken against speculator tradesmen during the Holy month of Ramadan.

In a statement to the press after a session devoted to oral questions at the Council of the National (Upper House of Parliament), Tebboune stated repressive measures would be taken by tradesmen that speculate on staple foods.

“The availability of products is matter for the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fishing while ordinary measures of control, supply and market control come under the prerogatives of the Trade ministry,” said Tebboune.

As regards the impact of some factors on supply and demand, the minister stressed “the government will interfere in case of problems related to imbalance between supply and demand.”
