ALGIERS-Justice Minister Tayeb Louh affirmed Tuesday in Algiers that the principles of the National Council for Human Rights (CNDH) reflect “strong” political willingness to promote human rights.
In response to a question of MPs of the Council of the Nation (Lower House) during the debate on the bill establishing the composition of the National Council for Human Rights (CNDH), appointment of its members and rules relating to its organization and functioning, Louh said the principles of this Council “are part of a clear vision and reflect the willingness of Algerian officials, headed by President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, to promote human rights in accordance with international principles and our references and culture.”
Algeria “has made major achievements in the human rights field,” the minister said, stressing that “no one can deny the progress achieved in terms of human rights since independence, like access to healthcare, housing and education, in accordance with the Constitution and the 1st November 1954 Statement that recognizes the social character of the Algerian State.”
As for CNDH’s mission, the minister stated that they consist in issuing early alert in situations of tension or crisis that may lead to violations of human rights, and taking the necessary preventive measures with relevant authorities.
