TIPASA- Algeria does not currently need shale gas and the future is in renewable energy, said Tuesday in Kolea Minister of Energy Noureddine Boutarfa.

“Algeria doesn’t need, in the short term, to use its shale gas, because it has other natural resources, including gas,” Boutarfa told APS on the sidelines of a conference on the national renewable energy programme at the Higher Institute of Commercial Studies in Kolea (Tipasa, 70-km west of Algiers).

The minister said “the energy sector is witnessing fast changes in the technologies used in energy production,” adding “the future is in renewable energy.”

There are many studies in the field and the energy mode in Algeria may change by the year 2050, said the minister.

“However, Algeria has adopted a strategy that will adapt to all scenarios, according to future studies and the needs of global markets,” he explained.
