The bluefin tuna fishing campaign will be launched on Friday and will run until June 24, a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, Fisheries and Aquaculture said on Thursday.

In total, “14 purse-seine vessels flying the national flag will participate in this campaign for a quota of 1,043.7 tonnes”, the document said.

This “record” quota attributed to Algeria by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (Cicta) was negotiated by the Algerian delegation which participated in its 20th extraordinary meeting held in November 2016 in Vilamoura (Portugal), said the same source.

To this end, all the “necessary provisions” have been taken for the smooth running of this campaign including “the handing over of fishing licenses to the tuna operators concerned”, the ministry added.

In addition, in the framework of the strengthening of national capacities for bluefin tuna fishing, this campaign will involve trainee students from fisheries training institutes and schools, which will be embarked on the tuna vessels mobilized during this operation .

On the other hand, the same source said, ICCAT has launched 12 regional controllers of Algerian nationality for this campaign, who will be onboard tuna vessels from several countries, including Tunisia, France and Libya.
