Algeria: A Road Accident Kills 18 in the East of the Country

The Algerian gendarmerie command (affiliated with the Ministry of Defense) said in a statement that 11 women, 6 children, and 1 man were among the victims.

At the time of its occurrence, the accident resulted in the deaths of 9 people, according to the local press. Since then, the death toll has continued to increase, until the announcement of the final death toll of 18.

The accident occurred when a heavy truck collided with a bus carrying families returning from a trip to Jijel beach (north-west of Constantine).

The statement said an investigation had been opened to clarify the circumstances of the accident, without providing further details. For their part, Internet users affirmed, on social media platforms, that among the victims, four dead were part of the same family.

For years, voices have been raised in Algeria calling for the implementation of strict and dissuasive measures against violators of the highway code, and in particular against drivers belonging to the heavy goods category.

According to official Algerian data, traffic accidents decreased by 13.16% in 2020, compared to 2019, given the restrictions on travel due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Algeria deplored nearly 19,000 traffic accidents in 2020, with a heavy toll of 2,844 dead and 25,836 injured.
