The Hirak is a gathering of citizens of all stripes who have decided to stand up as one man to say no to Abdelaziz Bouteflika’s 5th term. The pressure exerted by the protest movement got the better of Bouteflika’s regime. After that, still united within the Hirak, the Algerians maintained the fight to demand the renewal of the entire political class.
This is how weekly protest marches have been organized since 2019 to demand a significant change in the way we govern. The election victory of Abdelmajid Tebboune at the head of the Presidency has not convinced all Algerians who have seen the current President Bouteflika of continuity system.
The last legislative elections have come to show that there is a real crisis of confidence between Algerians and their leaders. To supervise the various demonstrations, the authorities are now asking for a special authorization issued by the Ministry of the Interior.
Civil society is united
Defying this measure, many Hirakists were arrested and detained. At the same time, political actors and personalities of views were also put behind bars.
Recently, actors of civil society in Algiers hosted a press conference to denounce them as abuses of power up to the leaders of opinion. Many grievances are blamed on the central power.
The speakers declared that the power in place is on the wrong track by repressing at all costs those who denounce the inadequacies at the highest point of the State. “The regime jails citizens involved in the hirak, demonstrators, lawyers, journalists, and opposition leaders. It is not about to stop ” declared officials of the Algerian League for the Defense of Human Rights (LADDH). The power in place must review its copy for these actors because the Algerians aspire to other things. For these leaders of civil society, the regime will be vomited by the population if this policy of repression does not stop
