Air Algérie must still make efforts in terms of safety and quality of service on board. According to the specialized site Airline Ratings, which publishes each year a ranking of the safest airlines in the world, the national airline is far behind.

Airline Ratings is an independent rating site that rates the safety of 385 airlines around the world. Like every year, Airline Ratings has published a ranking of the safest airlines in the world for 2024. To establish its ranking, the rating site was based on 11 criteria, such as the severity of incidents, the number of accident fatalities, aviation authority audits, fleet age, and pilot training.

The site gives each company a 7-star safety rating, taking these factors into account. However, Airline Ratings do not take into account in their assessment events beyond the control of the airline, such as bird strikes, diversions due to turbulence, or the impact of lightning.

Here are the Top 20 safest airlines in 2024

The 2024 safest airline rankings are topped by Air New Zealand, which received the maximum rating of 7 stars. The New Zealand airline claimed the top spot in the Top 20 thanks to its “firm focus on safety”. “She excelled across the broad spectrum of safety, never losing sight of even the smallest detail,” says Geoffrey Thomas, editor-in-chief of Airline Ratings.

Second place in the ranking goes to Qantas, the Australian airline, which also obtained a 7-star rating. Many other airlines such as Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Royal Jordanian, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, Etihad Airways, Air Canada, and Swiss International Airlines have also achieved a full 7-star rating.

Other safest airlines in 2024 include Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airlines (Japan), Eva Air (Taiwan), Avianca (Colombia), Qatar Airways, Air Mauritius (Mauritius), Finnair (Finland), British Airways, Lufthansa, and Turkish Airlines. Air France ranks 16th, with a rating of 7 stars out of 7.

What place does Air Algérie have in the world ranking of the safest companies?

In this ranking of the safest companies in 2024, Air Algérie finds itself in 345th place. It was awarded 1 star out of 7 in terms of safety, the same rating as that of 2021. Concerning on-board services, Air Algérie obtains a score of 2 out of 7. To evaluate the quality of on-board service, Airline Ratings took into account the following criteria: seat height, in-flight entertainment, information on the website, beds, meals, blankets, and earphones.

The other Algerian airline Tassili Airlines was given a rating of 6 stars out of 7 in terms of safety. The Sonatrach subsidiary, which operates several airlines between Algeria and France, therefore does better than Air Algérie by finding itself in 245th place in the world among the safest airlines in 2024.

What about other companies operating flights to and from Algeria?

Concerning the other airlines serving the Algerian sky, in addition to Air France which rose to 16th place in the ranking, we also find the German company Lufthansa ranked in 31st place, ahead of Transavia (76th), TUI Fly Belgium (120th) and Vueling (265th). All of these companies have been awarded between 5 and 7 stars in terms of safety.

What should be remembered from this year’s ranking is that no African airline appears in the Top 20 safest in the world. However, the Moroccan airline Royal Air Maroc (RAM) performs better than Air Algérie, since it ranks 55th globally with a rating of 7 stars out of 7. For its part, Tunisair, which is awarded 6 stars by Airline Ratings, finds itself in 179th place among the safest companies in 2024.
