Russia has become one of Morocco’s main wheat suppliers, alongside France, Romania, Lithuania and Poland.

According to data from the National Federation of Cereal and Legume Traders (FNCL) in Morocco, wheat imports fell from 369,862 tonnes imported in September to 256,013 tonnes in October.

France remains the main supplier of wheat to Morocco with 103,275 tonnes imported, compared to 59,459 tonnes for Romania, 33,000 tonnes for Lithuania, and 32,979 tonnes for Poland. Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine in February 2022, Russia has also become one of Morocco’s important suppliers with a volume of 27,500 tonnes.

To encourage Moroccan importers to maintain their purchases of wheat despite global inflation, the National Interprofessional Office for Cereals and Legumes (ONICL) has put in place support measures. A subsidy set at 27.01 dirhams per quintal, then increased to 28.43 dirhams per quintal in November, was granted to them.

Despite the drought and the rise in world cereal prices, Morocco wants to achieve the objective of 2 million tonnes of wheat imports by the end of the year in order to guarantee food security. It remains to be seen whether this objective will be achieved.
