The UN Mission in the Central African Republic (Minusca) announced on its Twitter account on Tuesday that two Moroccan peacekeepers died accidentally drowned on Sunday in Bangassou, in the south-east of the Central African Republic. The UN mission expressed its sincere condolences to the families of the two victims and to the Kingdom of Morocco.

According to the Minusca spokesperson, the two soldiers drowned “while bathing in the river” in Rafaï, 700 km east of the capital Bangui, near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). “It was an unfortunate accident,” he lamented.

The Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations in the Central African Republic and Head of Minusca, Valentine Rugwabiza, paid tribute to the two Moroccan peacekeepers, during a ceremony organized for this purpose. Their remains will be repatriated to Morocco.

The Moroccan contingent of Minusca, which has 750 blue helmets, has been operating since December 2014 in the south-east of the Central African Republic, a country in the grip of a civil war.
