The Spanish government admits negotiations with Morocco for control of Sahara airspace. Since the opening of the new page in relations with Rabat, in spring 2022, Madrid has recognized, in a written response posed by a member of parliament from the Canary Islands, “two bilateral meetings” devoted to this issue.

The government specifies that these negotiations are being carried out by point 7 of the Moroccan-Spanish Joint Declaration of April 7, 2022, announcing that “discussions concerning the management of airspaces will be initiated” between the two countries.

The daily OK Diario revealed in February that the working group responsible for examining the transfer of control of the Sahara space to Morocco “has held two meetings so far”. And to specify that Rabat and Madrid have set up “a technical commission to address the details related to technical and security cooperation in the management of the airspace” of the province.

As a reminder, on March 22, 2023, the Spanish government recognized in a response to a written question from a senator from the Canary Islands, the opening of “discussions with Morocco” on this subject.
