A 24-year-old woman was sexually assaulted on December 23 on board a Corsica Ferries boat. The attacker is a 23-year-old Algerian. He was arrested by the police and tried on Wednesday, December 27 in immediate appearance.
The facts, which are reported by Var-Matin, took place on the night of Saturday, December 23 to Sunday, December 24 aboard a boat from the shipping company Corsica Ferries during the crossing between Bastia and Toulon. The victim is a young woman of 24 who, while she was sleeping in a reclined chair, “was awakened by a man who was caressing her while masturbating,” the maritime gendarmes in charge of the investigation explained to the regional daily. 1.
The attacker was arrested thanks to video surveillance images
Following this, the young woman went to reception to warn the night watchman. “She stayed with him until the ship’s captain and the purser intervened and stayed with her until the arrival,” says Sébastien Romani, head of sales at Corsica Ferries to the BFM TV channel. “They watched the video surveillance cameras with her to see what had happened,” he added.
When the car ferry arrived at the port of Toulon on Sunday at 8 a.m., a 23-year-old Algerian national was arrested by the national police and then handed over to the maritime gendarmes who, as part of this investigation, seized the images from the system video surveillance of the boat. The attacker was referred to the public prosecutor’s office on December 26. Tried the next day in immediate appearance, he was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment, a fine of 1,500 euros, and 800 euros in damages for the young woman victim. He is now incarcerated at Farlède prison.
