Russian Ambassador to Algeria Igor Beliaev on Tuesday said his country is considering importing Algerian fruit and vegetables in the future and that Moscow has joint projects with Algeria for the manufacture of agricultural machinery.

“Moscow has joint projects with Algeria for the production of agricultural machinery”, he said in an interview with the Sputnik agency, stressing that “his country sees the possibility of importing in the future fruits and vegetables from Algeria ”.

The Russian diplomat explained that “Algeria has vast fertile agricultural land, which is an essential resource for the Algerian people who can consume and export these products abroad, especially to Africa and Europe”. “We in Russia, during the winter season, need these fruits and vegetables that we usually import from Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia. Why not import them in the future from Algeria, which has vegetables of similar or better quality than neighboring countries, “he said.

Elsewhere, Igor Beliaev spoke of Russian business plans in Algeria that are frozen. In this regard, he cited the example of the Gazprom company, which has been present for a long time in Algeria, which has projects but which are “almost frozen in recent years”, due, he said, “the change in certain laws ”. The Russian diplomat noted that “the Algerian government is currently moving towards improving the investment climate”.

With the application of the new investment laws, Igor Beliaev assures us that “Russian companies will study this improvement in the investment climate and will continue to work in Algeria”.

The Russian ambassador recalled that “just after independence (from Algeria, editor’s note), Russian experts came to help the country explore natural resources”. He added that “the Algerian government has a plan to exploit these resources which are enormous”.
