“Phoenix Express 2021”: 13 countries participate in military exercises in Tunisia

The Tunisian navy began joint military exercises with the USAFRICOM, this Tuesday, May 18, 2021. Exercise “Phoenix Express 2021” brings together 13 countries and is one of three regional maritime exercises carried out by the US Naval Forces Africa (NAVAF).

More than 130 Tunisian, Algerian, Belgian, Egyptian, French, Greek, Italian, Libyan, Maltese, Mauritanian, Moroccan, Spanish, and American soldiers take part in the exercises taking place in Tunisia and throughout the Mediterranean Sea with, as maritime bases, Bizerte, La Goulette and the northern coast of Tunisia.

This is the first time that Tunisia has hosted joint military exercises, as announced today by the General of the National Navy, Jamel Ben Omrane, stressing that this exercise is an opportunity at the strategic and operational level to strengthen the links with participating countries.

Indeed, “Phoenix Express 2021” is part of a global strategy aimed at providing opportunities for collaboration between African forces and international partners in order to respond to maritime security concerns.

The operation, sponsored by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) is primarily designed to improve regional cooperation, information sharing, etc.

As such, several foreign warships docked last Saturday to participate in this military naval exercise.
