Algeria, France, Opel: attractive prices, but not the best engine

In the wake of the Renault 1.2 engine scandal, the Stellantis group in turn seems to be facing major problems linked to its 1.2 Puretech turbo engine. Although the manufacturer officially denies any concerns, behind the scenes reveals a different story.

According to Que Choisir, many owners of Peugeot, Citroën, DS, and Opel cars complain about the performance of the 1.2 Puretech turbo engine despite its title of “best engine of the year” awarded four consecutive times between 2015 and 2018. This engine, which has enjoyed great success in terms of sales, seems to pose significant problems, reminiscent of the situation encountered by Renault with its 1.2 engines subject to premature breakage.

The first recall was launched by the European Commission on November 20, 2020, affecting 14 countries. In France, a product recall was carried out for Peugeot, DS, and Citroën models via RappelConso, the official alert site for dangerous products. Authorities explained that “the vacuum pump can be damaged by abrasion of the timing belt material, which can reduce or eliminate brake assist, increasing the risk of an accident.”

The timing belt problems persist, despite the measures taken. Owners of Peugeot 208, 2008, 308, 3008, 5008, and Partner models manufactured between March 2013 and April 2017, as well as drivers of DS3, DS4, Citroën C3, C3 Picasso, C4, C4 Cactus, C4 Picasso, and Berlingo, were affected. Testimonials on social networks and forums indicate that the problem persists even in cars produced after 2017.

Some owners expressed their frustration on a Facebook page called “PSA 1.2 Puretech problems: belt, excess oil consumption, engine HS”, bringing together nearly 6,000 members. They dispute Stellantis’ official statement that there are almost no problems and say they are experiencing difficulties, even with vehicles still under warranty.

Internally, documents have been discovered indicating that the manufacturer and its network recognize the problems with the engine. In a letter dated December 21, 2022, addressed to vehicle owners, the director of Citroën after-sales service mentioned timing belt problems and advised on necessary maintenance. This situation could potentially lead to legal action, with some lawyers seriously considering filing a class action against Stellantis.
