Imports of alcoholic beverages fell by more than 20% in 2020 in Morocco. The entire import chain for these products has been hit hard by the health crisis.

Moroccan companies importing beer, wine and strong alcoholic beverages have drastically reduced the quantities purchased for these products. Over the past year, with the exception of December, the drop amounts to around 124 million dirhams, Hespress reports.

More specifically, these companies imported nearly 548 million dirhams of beer, wine and other types of alcohol between January and November 2020, against 672 million dirhams compared to the same period in 2019.

The closure of bars, restaurants and hotels due to the state of emergency decreed to limit the spread of the coronavirus, has led to the reduction in the consumption of these drinks in general. But Moroccans have not stopped consuming it, especially beer and wine, which are relatively inexpensive in stores that now control 40% of the total alcoholic beverage market in Morocco.
