Libyan Foreign Minister Najla Al-Mangoush was suspended from her post by Prime Minister Abdelhamid Dbeibah after her meeting with her Israeli counterpart, Eli Cohen, was revealed.

The head of Libyan diplomacy was brought before a commission of inquiry chaired by the Minister of Justice. In the meantime, Najla Al-Mangoush has been banned from leaving Libyan territory.

This sanction against Najla Al-Mangouch was made public on Sunday evening by the Libyan Government of National Unity, based in Tripoli, and which is recognized by the UN.

It follows the revelation hours earlier of a meeting Najla Al-Mangoush had with her Israeli counterpart Eli Cohen a week ago in Rome, Italy.

In response and after the outcry over Cohen’s statements about the discussions he had with Najla Al-Mangoush, the Libyan Foreign Ministry explained what happened in Rome.

Without denying its existence, he indicated that this meeting was “unofficial and unofficial, during an interview with the Italian Foreign Minister, which “did not involve any discussion, agreement or consultation”.

To reassure the Libyans and Libya’s partners, the ministry indicates that Najla Al-Mangoush reiterated to Eli Cohen in a “clear way the constant positions of Libya with regard to the Palestinian question“.

The revelation, which was made by Israel’s foreign minister, sparked widespread angry reactions in Libya where protesters took to the streets on Sunday to express their anger outside the government palace and attack the ministry’s headquarters of Foreign Affairs to demand the dismissal of Najla Al-Mangoush, according to Al Jazeera.

Anti-normalization protests with Israel took place in other Libyan cities on Sunday evening.

The presidency of the Libyan House of Representatives convened an emergency session on Monday to discuss Al-Mangoush’s meeting with his Israeli counterpart. He called on the National Unity Government to sack her and investigate her.
