Libya is set to join the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (also known as the NIGAL Pipeline) which carries gas from Nigeria to Europe, a much-needed boost for Europeans amid the current energy crisis despite the development of another ongoing gas pipeline project linking Nigeria to Algeria.

Oil and Gas Minister Mohamed Aoun said last Sunday that they had submitted to the government of national unity a study regarding the NIGAL gas pipeline which pumps gas from Nigeria to Europe, and according to the authorities concerned, it will go through Niger and Libya before the final. Destination: Europe; A path that contradicts that agreed by Algeria, Nigeria and Niger.

Libya’s chances of being part of the NIGAL pipeline project are slim despite ongoing negotiations on its feasibility with Nigeria in particular; Between Libyan and Nigerian officials and African oil ministers at the recent ministerial meeting of OPEC members. However, the security situation in Libya continues to hamper the project.

On July 28, Algeria and Nigeria signed an agreement to officially launch a 4,000-kilometer gas pipeline project to transport gas through Niger from Nigeria to the Algerian coast and then to Europe.

Similarly, on September 16, Morocco signed a memorandum of understanding with Nigeria and West African countries for the construction of a 5,660-kilometer gas pipeline. Which transports gas to Europe despite difficult logistics as the pipeline will cross 15 West African countries before reaching Europe.
