Israel before the ICJ: Did Morocco Lie?

Guilty of supporting Israel simply through normalization, Morocco is trying to make people believe the opposite. The press close to the royal palace broadcast large extracts from the intervention of the kingdom’s ambassador in The Hague, where proceedings are underway against Israel, adding that the Palestinians and the ICJ congratulated Morocco for its pleading. Some voices cry lies.

The procedure was introduced in December 2022, before the current conflict, by the United Nations General Assembly, which requested an advisory opinion on the legal fallout from colonization and Israeli practices in the occupied Palestinian territories. The procedure is underway.

According to the Moroccan press, the representative of Morocco Mohamed Basri attended the first session, “in support of the oral presentation of Palestine” which took place Monday, February 19.

“The presence of Morocco at the oral pleadings, in this case, is part of the continuity of the active engagement of the Kingdom in this case before the International Court”, writes 360. ma in an article under the title: “Morocco underlines the King’s commitment to the Palestinian cause. »

Like many titles in the Moroccan press,  360. ma, which is reputed to be very close to the Royal Palace, published large extracts from Mohamed Basri’s “written plea”, which the Court “took due account”.

Israeli colonization before the ICJ: doubts about Morocco’s position

He would thus have reaffirmed the “determination” of Morocco, of which King Mohamed VI is “president of the Al-Quds Committee”, to “work by all legal means within its reach, to protect the legal, historical, political and spiritual status of the Holy City.”

The ambassador would also have reiterated the “active commitment” of his country   “in favor of respect for international law and the promotion of peace in the Middle East” which involves the two-state solution, while recalling the “ consensus of the international community on the legal status of Israeli settlements” which “constitute an obstacle to peace and threaten to make a two-state solution impossible”.

The media Hespress wrote for its part that “the Palestinians congratulate Morocco for its plea before the ICJ”. In Morocco, people are trying to make people believe that the Court would also have expressed the same satisfaction.

“No, the ICJ did not welcome the commitment of the King of Morocco towards Palestine,” Spanish journalist Ignacio Cembrero wrote on X. The journalist from El Confidencial, a specialist in the countries of the Maghreb and Western Sahara, added that “the Moroccan ambassador did not intervene before the Court to defend the Palestinians”, and that “he silently attended an audience.”

No, the @CIJ_ICJ did not welcome the commitment of the King of #Morocco towards #Palestine, and the Moroccan ambassador did not intervene before the Court to defend the Palestinians. He silently attended a hearing. Check out the list of speakers!

Morocco does not appear in the list of intervening countries. These are Palestine, South Africa,

Chile, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Cuba, Egypt, Bolivia, Colombia, Brazil, the Netherlands, France, the United States and Russia. Did Morocco then lie?
