In Algeria, Tebboune Appoints a New Minister of Communication

More than three months after the sudden dismissal of Mohamed Bouslimani, the presidency has finally appointed a new Minister of Communication. Journalist and teacher Mohamed Laagab was chosen.

Three and a half months of power vacancy at the Ministry of Communication: We had to wait until this Sunday, September 3, for the Presidency of the Republic to announce the appointment of Mohamed Laagab to the post of Minister of Communication, replacing Mohamed Bouslimani. The eviction of the latter, on June 20, had not been officially commented on, but his departure would have been linked to the dissemination by private media of information, denied by the authorities, on the expulsion of the ambassador of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Algiers for an alleged espionage case.

Journalist and professor of journalism at the University of Algiers, Mohamed Laagab is an old acquaintance of Abdelmadjid Tebboune, with whom he remained close despite a short period of disgrace. Laagab was in fact one of the rare people who did not turn their backs on the president when he was suddenly dismissed from his post as Prime Minister in August 2017 .

As soon as Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s candidacy for the December 2019 presidential election was announced, Laagab joined the candidate’s campaign staff to direct his communication. Upon Tebboune’s arrival at the El-Mouradia palace, Mohamed Laagab was appointed project manager at the presidency, before being responsible for monitoring the file of the new Constitution, which was adopted by referendum in November 2020.

While he was one of those close to the presidential circle, he was abruptly dismissed from office in January 2021 without any explanation. However, his journey through the desert was short-lived. In April 2022, he was appointed senator of the presidential third and, in September 2023, he entered the government
