Morocco will receive an envelope of at least 500 million euros from the European Union to strengthen its actions in the fight against illegal immigration. This aid will cover the period 2021-2027.

The 500 million euros in aid announced far exceeds the 343 million euros previously received by Morocco to strengthen border controls and fight effectively against irregular immigration, reports El Pais, stressing that this increase in the amount of aid is proof that Morocco is an increasingly “important” partner, not only of Spain or France but of all EU member countries.

“This amount gives an idea of the degree of ambition of Brussels,” said a credible EU source. The money will be earmarked for the integration and protection of refugees living in Morocco, forced returns, police cooperation and the fight against mafias, according to sources familiar with the matter. In addition to Morocco, The Gambia, Senegal, and Mauritania will also benefit from European aid, with the EU developing action plans in the field of migration with all the countries of North Africa, with the exception from Algeria.

Negotiations for obtaining aid started a long time ago. Rabat remained firm on its demands regarding the distribution of funds. For its part, Brussels wanted more commitments from Morocco, particularly with regard to the return of its nationals who entered Europe irregularly. The 500 million agreed does not in any way cover the expenses incurred by Morocco to play its role of “policeman” of Europe, and is estimated at 435 million per year, according to an economic report from the EU.

Europe suspended aid to Morocco in May 2021 after the Sebta migration crisis. “No one can blackmail Europe,” declared Margaritis Schinas, Vice-President of the European Commission. On the other hand, the recent assault on Melilla which left at least 23 dead could lead the EU to increase the kitty planned for Morocco. “When it comes to migration, our neighbors have more to gain from working with us than against us,” said a community source.
