Coach of the French women’s team, Hervé Renard is one of the candidates to succeed Djamel Belmadi at the head of the Algeria team, eliminated in the first round of CAN 2024.
The end of a story for the Algerian team, and soon the start of a new one. After six years at the head of the Fennecs (2018-2024), Djamel Belmadi left his position as coach the day after another failure with the elimination of Riyad Mahrez’s teammates in the first round of CAN 2024. With the former OM player gone, the Algerian leaders and the president of the Federation Walid Sadi are now looking for a new technician to take over. And Hervé Renard (55 years old) would be one of the potential candidates.
UNDER CONTRACT WITH THE FFF UNTIL THE 2024 OLYMPICS
The French coach has the advantage of knowing African football very well having managed Ghana, Zambia, Angola, Ivory Coast and Morocco. He even won the African Cup of Nations twice with Zambia (2012) and Ivory Coast (2015). It is therefore not surprising to see his name circulating to succeed Djamel Belmadi.
Problem, Hervé Renard is not free. The former Lille coach is currently coach of the French women’s team and under contract with the French Football Federation until the 2024 Olympics in Paris, where the Blues will try to win a medal. He is therefore not expected to leave his post immediately, but he could be available at the end of the Olympic Games.
Will the Algerian Federation and its president Walid Sadi be ready to wait? This cannot be ruled out. Especially since Hervé Renard has never hidden his desire to return to Africa one day.
