Algerian-Swedish Diplomacy: Towards New Prospects for Cooperation

Stockholm, Sweden – Algerian diplomacy is opening up to new perspectives of international cooperation while Lounes Magramane, secretary general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Algeria, co-chaired a session of political consultations with his Swedish counterpart, Jan Knutsson, State Secretary for Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Sweden. This meeting, held in Stockholm, covered a wide range of topics, from bilateral relations to burning regional and international issues, highlighting Algeria’s ambitions for cooperation in an ever-changing world.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

During this session of political consultations, the two parties examined the overall bilateral relations between Algeria and Sweden, seeking ways to strengthen them in various areas. The emphasis was placed on digitalization, start-ups, energy, environment, education, academic exchanges, agriculture and industry. This diversification of areas of cooperation reflects the desire of the two countries to leverage their respective strengths to promote mutually beneficial economic and technological growth.

Algeria, rich in natural resources and with a growing domestic market, offers interesting investment opportunities for Sweden, while the latter, with its expertise in innovation and advanced technologies, can contribute to the technological development of ‘Algeria.

Regional and International Issues at the Center of Discussions

In addition to bilateral relations, the political consultation session was also an opportunity to address crucial regional and international issues. Among the subjects examined, the situation in occupied Palestine, the question of occupied Western Sahara, and the situation in the Sahel caught the attention of Algerian and Swedish diplomats.

The situation in occupied Palestine remains a major concern for Algeria, which has long supported the Palestinian cause. The two countries discussed recent developments in this region and the need to continue efforts towards a peaceful and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The question of occupied Western Sahara, another sensitive issue, was also raised. Algeria has expressed its position in favor of the self-determination of the Sahrawi people by United Nations resolutions. The discussions highlighted the importance of finding a political solution to this conflict which has persisted for decades.

Finally, the situation in the Sahel, marked by security instability and the terrorist threat, was discussed. Algeria, as a key regional player, shared its views on the challenges facing the region and the need for enhanced international cooperation to address these challenges.

Commitment to Continued Cooperation

The discussions underlined the importance of maintaining the regular mechanism of bilateral political consultations between Algeria and Sweden. The two parties agreed that the next session, scheduled for Algiers, should take place in 2024. In addition, they committed to increasing the exchange of ministerial visits, thus strengthening ties between the two countries.

It was affirmed that cooperation between Algeria and Sweden will be based on the win-win principle, promoting fruitful partnerships in various fields, for the benefit of both nations.
