ALGIERS- the import quota on vehicles for 2017 is expected to be between 40,000 and 50,000 units, said Tuesday, in Algiers, Minister of Housing, Urban Planning and the City and interim Trade Minister Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
“It is likely that the number of cars to be imported in 2017 will vary between 40,000 and 50,000 cars,” the minister told the press on the sidelines of an inspection visit to the new city of Sidi Abdallah.
In addition to Renault’s cars which are manufactured locally for more than two years, the year 2017 will see the entry into production of several vehicle assembly plants like Hyundai and Volkswagen.
A meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal, will be held in the next few days to set the import quotas of the products subject to import licences during the 2017 fiscal year (cars, cement, reinforcing bars ….).
The import bill of passenger vehicles reached USD1.292 billion in 2016 against USD2.038 billion in 2015, down by 36.61%, according to the Customs.
