On the question of  Western Sahara, Algeria and South Africa share the same position which was withdrawn this Thursday during a meeting between Amar Belani and the South African ambassador in Algiers.

Belani, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, received this Thursday, November 10 Billy Lesedi Mastelha, Ambassador of South Africa in Algeria, according to a press release from the department of Ramtane Lamamra.

The South African ambassador congratulated Algeria on the success of the Arab Summit in Algiers (1 and  2 November), while “expressing his country’s satisfaction with the decisions taken by the Arab leaders, particularly with regard to concerns the centrality of the Palestinian question and the revitalization of the Arab peace initiative”, according to the same source.

“Resuming direct negotiations without preconditions”

The South African ambassador also “praised the efforts of Algeria in this file which allowed the signing by the Palestinian factions, Thursday, October 13, in Algiers, of the “Declaration of Algiers” to concretize the Palestinian reconciliation”.

In addition to the Arab summit and Palestinian reconciliation, Amar Belani and his host have talks on “regional issues of common interest”, including in particular that of Western Sahara.

Algeria and Africa thus “reaffirmed their unfailing support for the just struggle of the Saharawi people, while stressing the need for the two parties to the conflict, namely the Polisario Front and Morocco, to resume direct negotiations, without preconditions and in good faith, with a view to reaching a mutually acceptable political solution which guarantees the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara, in accordance with international legality.”

Algeria and South Africa, which support the struggle of the Saharawi people for their self-determination, are among the main defenders of the Saharawi cause in Africa and in the world.
