The UN General Assembly has adopted a non-binding resolution, calling for the immediate withdrawal of the Russian army from Ukrainian territory. The resolution was approved by 141 votes for, 7 against, and 32 abstentions. Morocco, which usually abstains during the adoption of texts by the United Nations denouncing the Russian invasion in Ukraine, this time voted in favor of the resolution.

The kingdom had been absent during the votes of resolutions condemning the Russian military intervention on March 2 and 24, as well as on April 7, decreeing the suspension of Russia from the UN Human Rights Council. However, Morocco had voted in favor of a resolution condemning the annexation of Ukrainian provinces by Russia on October 12. This resolution had been approved by a large majority of the members of the international organization, with 143 countries in favor and 5 against.

Morocco’s vote in favor of the resolution reaffirms its commitment to international peace and security. The kingdom’s position, which generally favors diplomacy and mediation to resolve conflicts, also underlines the importance of the peaceful resolution of international disputes.

The UN General Assembly resolution is an important step toward resolving the conflict in Ukraine. Although non-binding, it sends a strong message to Russia to withdraw its troops from Ukrainian territory and respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
