Two children died in floods caused by torrential rains that affected central and eastern Algeria on Wednesday and Thursday.
The first tragedy occurred in Guelma, a town in eastern Algeria, when a 12-year-old girl was washed away, according to the electronic newspaper ADN-Med.
In a commune of Tipaza, near the capital Algiers, a 10-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries caused by the collapse of a retaining wall near his home on Thursday.
The dramatic toll which could have been heavier was confirmed on Thursday by the Algerian Ministry of the Interior, which also reported significant material damage in several regions.
Thirty sub-Saharan nationals, including women and children, were rescued by Civil Protection units while they were surrounded by water.
In addition, the Civil Protection services also recorded landslides and subsidence, particularly in the departments of Bouira and Bejaรฏa, in Kabylie.
After a long period of drought, these spring rains, even if they affected several road infrastructures, are however welcome for the agricultural sector.
