The demonstration brought together several opposition figures, such as Samir Dilou, Ahmed Nejib Chebbi and Abdellatif Mekki

Several opposition leaders organized a demonstration on July 25, the date on which the country celebrates Republic Day, but which also coincides with the implementation of the “exceptional measures” decreed two years ago by President Kaïs Saïed.

Several political figures from the Ennahdha movement and the National Salvation Front gathered in the center of the Tunisian capital, in front of the municipal theater, where they chanted, with several dozen supporters, slogans calling for “the return of legitimacy and democracy“, “the release of political prisoners“, “the departure of the president and the end of the coup d’etat“ and “the return to the 2014 Constitution“, among other slogans castigating the action of the current government and the general situation of the country.

Several figures of the Tunisian opposition, like Samir Dilou, Ahmed Nejib Chebbi and Abdellatif Mekki, then followed one another to hold speeches calling for “the return of legitimacy and democracy and the end of the coup d’etat“, affirming their support for political detainees. They also pointed to the country’s difficult economic situation, and the government’s recent decisions on immigration.

On February 14, President Saïed accused some of the defendants of being involved in a plot against state security, holding them responsible for the shortage of basic products and the soaring prices, accusations however rejected by the opposition.

Ennahdha movement president Rached Ghannouchi and opposition figures Chaima Issa, Jaouhar Ben Mbarek, Khayam Turki, Issam Chebbi, Ghazi Chaouachi, Ridha Belhaj, Lazhar Akremi, and Abdelhamid Jelassi are being held in connection with the case.
