A week after his arrest, according to a press release published by his wife, Zeineb Mraihi

Tunisian justice has issued a prison warrant against the leader of the Ennahdha movement, Sahbi Atig, arrested a week earlier.

This is what emerges from a press release published by Zeineb Mraihi, the wife of Sahbi Atig, late on Friday evening, on her Facebook account.

“A warrant of committal has been issued against my husband, Sahbi Atig, who was arrested on May 6,” Zeineb Mraihi said in his statement.

And to add: “The case is malicious, and the charges against him are false. The whole case is based on false statements whose source is a 22-year-old young man, with a criminal record, who is currently imprisoned in a drug case”.

“Since his prison, the young man has given false testimony concerning a case of theft which dates back to 2016 in a neighborhood neighboring ours,” Mraihi added.

According to a previous statement by the Ennahdha Movement, “Authorities arrested Atig on the basis of false accusations from a person against whom Atig had previously filed several complaints for defamation and damage to honor, without justice having yet been pronounced on any of them.”

Tunisia has seen a wave of arrests since February 11, targeting politicians, media professionals, activists, judges and businessmen.

Tunisian President Kais Saied accused some of the detainees of “conspiring against state security and being behind the shortage of basic foodstuffs and soaring prices”.

While Saïed has repeatedly stressed the independence of the judicial authorities, the opposition accuses him of using the judiciary to prosecute those who refuse the exceptional measures he began to impose on July 25, 2021, leading to a serious political crisis.

Atig was arrested last Saturday, after being prevented from leaving the territory the same day.
