Parties leading a national campaign for the boycott of the July 25 referendum on the new constitution consider that the draft fundamental law published in the Official Journal after the start of the referendum campaign is a violation of the laws and even of the decrees issued by the president Kaïs Saïed himself, as part of his coup against constitutional legitimacy.

In their statement published today, Wednesday, July 13, 2022, the parties in question (Al-Qotb, Attayar, Ettakatol, Al-Joumhouri and Al-Oummal) stressed that the introduction of 46 “corrections and amendments” in the draft of constitution initially published on June 30 by the Jort is another proof of the personal approach and the spirit of improvisation that surrounded the drafting process of this project, which did not even take into account the proposals of the committee in charge of writing a constitution, and whose president himself, professor of constitutional law Sadok Belaid, has denied any paternity of the text published by Kaïs Saïed.

These amendments are artifices by which the “absolute monarch”, in the words of the press release, has attempted, through a new decree, to embellish a constitution that establishes personal power and opens the way to the return of authoritarian rule in total contradiction with the principles and foundations of a democratic civil state.

Opponents of Mr. Saïed denounced what they described as the complicity of the installed electoral commission, its involvement in covering up these abuses, and its silence on the fact that the author of the initiative did not believe it was his duty to publish an explanatory memorandum for the public as required by law while turning a blind eye to the huge funds spent on advertising the presidential project through various advertising mediums and platforms and social networks.

The five parties reiterated their rejection of the putschist process and called on citizens not to engage in it, to boycott the referendum charade, and to adhere to the values of citizenship and the choice of the democratic system in the face of attempts to bring the country back. to the tyranny overthrown by the revolution of freedom and dignity.
