Tunisia Embarks on the Development of Green Hydrogen With the Support of Germany

North African countries want to take advantage of their resources and proximity to the European market to position themselves as major exporters of green hydrogen. 

Tunisia officially embarked on the path to the development of green hydrogen, during a workshop organized on Tuesday, June 28 in Tunis, by the German agency for international cooperation, GIZ. This is Tunisia’s first major commitment in the field of green hydrogen production.

The project was implemented by GIZ, in cooperation with the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy of Tunisia, and mainly aims to improve the conditions to develop a value chain based on hydrogen. green and its derivatives in Tunisia.

The project revolves around four strategic components, which are: the development of the national strategy for green hydrogen, support for the creation of a green hydrogen economy, the strengthening of research, training, innovation and the establishment of a Tunisian-German technology hub for green hydrogen.

By embarking on this path, the country joins its North African neighbors: Egypt, Algeria and Morocco. Mauritania, which borders Algeria for example, signed a framework agreement with CWP in May 2022 for its $40 billion green hydrogen project AMAN.

For Tunisia, which is experiencing a severe energy crisis, green hydrogen is an opportunity to meet local demand.  

Egypt is the most dynamic country in the development of this energy. The authorities have already signed several agreements for the construction, in the economic zone of the Suez Canal in particular, of green hydrogen production facilities. The Algerian authorities, for their part, are working to find partnerships and develop the national potential in green hydrogen.

Green hydrogen produced by the electrolysis of water and from renewable energies offers several advantages in the context of the energy transition, in particular zero greenhouse gas emissions and the possibility of being stored and distributed Requirement.
