According to a statement from the National Security Region Syndicate in Tunisia, the Interior Ministry did not immediately comment on the incident.

The Syndicate of the National Security District in Tunisia announced on Friday the arrest of a “terrorist” element who had stabbed several law enforcement officers in the capital Tunis.

The Syndicate (a law enforcement union structure) said in a statement that “at dawn on Friday, a terrorist element was arrested after stabbing law enforcement officers with a large knife.”

“The terrorist stabbed a law enforcement officer from the Facility Protection Department of the General Administration of Intervention Units (affiliated with the Ministry of the Interior), then attacked several law enforcement officers affiliated with the District of national security in Tunis, with a knife”, adds the same source.

According to the union, “the terrorist was arrested after taking refuge in a building in the capital Tunis”.

There was no comment from the Tunisian Interior Ministry on the incident until 0945 GMT.

Last March, the spokesman for the Tunisian National Guard, Houssemeddine Jebabli, announced the discovery of 148 terrorist cells, without specifying the period during which these cells were identified.

He pointed out that “in coordination with friendly countries, several terrorist operations and acts of sabotage targeting neighboring countries were foiled.”

Since May 2011, Tunisia has been the scene of sporadic terrorist acts, the frequency of which has intensified since 2013, claiming the lives of dozens of law enforcement and armed forces personnel, as well as foreign tourists.
