The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on Monday welcomed the release of a doctor who had been kidnapped in Tripoli, the Libyan capital, on December 1.
“UNSMIL welcomes the release of Dr Siddiq Ben Della, four days after his kidnapping, and calls for a thorough and independent investigation into this incident and all incidents of arbitrary detention and kidnapping perpetrated by armed groups which continue to undermine the rule of law across Libya, “the mission wrote on Twitter.
The UN-backed Libyan government’s interior ministry announced on Sunday that it had released the doctor and arrested the kidnappers, adding that appropriate legal proceedings had been taken against them “so that a fair legal sanction could be taken against them “.
Siddiq Khalfallah Ben Della, 66-year-old university professor, renowned orthopedic surgeon and deputy director of a local hospital, was abducted in Tripoli on December 1 after his car was ambushed by four gunmen, according to UNSIL in uniform.
Libya is plunged into a state of insecurity and chaos following the ouster and death of its former leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
