The Presidency of the Republic announced the holding of an “early presidential election” on Saturday, September 7, 2024. It is still unknown whether Abdelmadjid Tebboune intends to run for a second term.

Initially scheduled for next December, the Algerian presidential election will take place on September 7, 2024, announced the presidency in a press release made public this Thursday, March 21. The press release also indicates that the electoral body will be agreed on June 8.

The decision to organize an early presidential election was taken following a meeting held by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in the presence of the Prime Minister, the army chief of staff, the chief of staff of the presidency, and the Minister of the Interior.

Abdelmadjid Tebboune candidate for his succession?

The presidential press release did not mention the reasons that justify holding this election in September while the mandate of Abdelmadjid Tebboune expires in December 2024. Elected in December 2019, the head of state has not to date publicly expressed his intention to run or not for the second term. Barring a big surprise, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, now 78 years old, should however be a candidate for his succession.

This is the second early presidential election to take place in Algeria in the last thirty years. In September 1998, President Liamine Zeroual announced his resignation and the holding of a presidential election in April 1999. This saw Abdelaziz Bouteflika come to power. He stayed there for twenty years before being chased out by the hirak in April 2019.
