The cream of the cross-country racing crop are coming to Morocco this week to test themselves on the sand dunes of North Africa at the Rallye du Maroc. We’re primed for intense battles in the car and bike categories, as racers look to secure pole position for the upcoming Dakar Rally.

Looking to defend his Rallye du Maroc car title over 1,995km of timed racing is two-time Dakar winner Nasser Al-Attiyah. The Qatari’s Toyota is sure to come under fire though from the two PEUGEOT 3008 DKRs driven by Carlos Sainz and Sébastien Loeb.

It’s two years since I made my cross-country debut in Morocco. I think it’s fair to say we have covered a great deal of ground and made good progress. We now need to convert that into victorySébastien Loeb

Further competition will come from not only the MINIs of Bryce Menzies and Kuba Przygoński, but also the extreme heat and terrain that awaits at this six-stage cross-country rally.

Reigning Dakar champion Sam Sunderland will be racing the new look KTM 450 Rally bike for the first time in Morocco (see image below). The British rider finished as runner-up at the previous edition of Rallye du Maroc so the sand racing specialist has victory on his mind this time around.

We’re here with a new bike that we’ve been testing a lot and now we get to see how we go with it in a race. It’s so important that you get the chance to try out new pieces of kit in a race environment rather than just preparing things in testingSam Sunderland

The latest Red Bull KTM Factory Team machine will also be ridden by Matthias Walkner and Antoine Méo. This trio will be joined in South America next year by team-mate Toby Price, as they look to secure a 17th consecutive Dakar win for KTM.
